SDCC Expansion Project History
The current proposal to expand the San Diego Convention Center is the culmination of a multi-year planning process that involved citizens, organizations, and elected officials from across San Diego.
Plans to expand the convention center began to be publicly considered in 2009 when a Citizens Task Force was convened. In addition to providing San Diego with the all-under-one-roof meeting space demanded by planners of Comic-Con and other events, it will improve waterfront access for both residents and visitors. The project opens up stunning new views of San Diego Bay, re-routes truck traffic away from pedestrian areas, and includes numerous public benefits including a 5-acre rooftop public park.

Comic-Con Stays in San Diego
Comic-Con International, the mega convention that has called San Diego home for more than 40 years, will remain at the San Diego Convention Center through 2016. Organizers for Comic-Con began considering other cities as their contract with the San Diego Convention Center came to an end in 2012. The increasingly popular event’s square footage needs have continued to grow through the years making it difficult to adequately accommodate their present and future space needs in the present convention facility. Without an Expansion underway by 2016, Comic-Con will have no choice but to move their event to a facility that can better accommodate an event of their size.
